- Pears are so tender that they were once called the "butter fruit."
- Pioneers used as much of the pear as possible. They ate it, used the juice for cider, made furniture from the wood and created yellow dye from the leaves.
- The pear is related to the rose and originates in Eastern Asia. It's thousands of years old and has produced literally thousands of varieties of itself.
- It's one of the first fruits to be brought to North America from Europe. Pear trees were growing 350 years ago in the Massachusetts Bay colony.
