Ontario Government Announces Funding to Support Fresh Grape Growers

                                                                                                FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Niagara, ON, August 28, 2024 – The Ontario Fresh Grape Growers (OFGG) are pleased to announce the launch of a new marketing initiative that will raise awareness of and increase consumer demand for fresh and delicious locally grown table grapes. The Ontario government is investing up to $100,000 over three years in this 50 per cent cost-share project to increase the promotional activities designed to boost the Ontario table grape industry.

Over the next three years, this initiative will focus on consumer market research, in-store sampling events, and asset and packaging development, that will drive a comprehensive media campaign to increase awareness, consumption, and sales of Ontario-grown table grapes.

This funding is part of Ontario's broader commitment to strengthening local agriculture and ensuring the long-term viability and profitability of the fresh grape sector. The promotional activities included in this project will:

  • Enable growers to better understand consumer preferences;
  • Provide direct engagement opportunities with shoppers; and
  • Create effective marketing materials.

“Our government is proud to invest in ensuring more Ontario consumers identify and purchase local homegrown grapes,” said Rob Flack, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness. “From the farm gate to the consumer’s plate, we are supporting Ontario grape growers and helping increase their long-term competitiveness and profitability for a stronger agri-food sector overall.”

OFGG has been expanding the sector with the introduction of new grape varieties, including a blue grape called ‘Jupiter®’and a promising new green grape that has shown exceptional commercial potential. By diversifying the range of grapes available to consumers, the industry aims to meet evolving market demands and provide more options for Ontario families in their local grocery stores.

The project also places a strong emphasis on sustainability, with a particular focus on developing environmentally friendly packaging solutions. Sustainable packaging not only aligns with consumer expectations but also supports the goals of reducing environmental impact and promoting responsible farming practices.

Sarah Marshall, Manager of OFGG, welcomed the announcement, stating, "This funding is crucial for the growth and sustainability of our industry. It is a vital part of promoting local agriculture, and helping our growers thrive in a competitive market.”

As these promotional activities roll out over the next three years, OFGG will track progress and adjust strategies as needed, ensuring the greatest possible impact for the growers and consumers alike.
