Storage & handling
Ordering, Care and Storage of chilled & pitted cherries
Order enough fresh cherries daily from your supplier to fill consumer requests and impulse purchases. At season’s end, order extra pails to freeze so you can offer customers Ontario chilled and pitted cherries year-round.
Practice the 1st In, 1st Out Rule! Upon receiving, code-date all deliveries to make sure the first pails you receive are the first pails that are displayed.
Ontario chilled and pitted cherries are very perishable if not handled properly!
Cherries should be kept in cold storage for up to four days or, for longer periods, in a freezer at -1° to 0°C (30° to 32°F).
The Ontario tender fruit and grape industry has built its reputation by consistently supplying Canadian retailers with safe quality fruit.
The Ontario Tender Fruit Producers' and the Ontario Fresh Grape Growers' Marketing Boards, in conjunction with the Canadian Horticultural Council have adopted the Canada GAP OFFS (On Farm Food Safety) program based on the seven basic principles of the internationally-recognized HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) approach.
