ONTARIO APRICOTS

It is thought that apricots have been cultivated for at least 5,000 years and although origin of the apricot may still be unknown, they were probably introduced to North America some 200-300 years ago. Today, apricot cultivation has spread to all parts of the globe with climates that support it.

Although still susceptible to spring frost (as they flower early), the tree is slightly more cold-hardy than the peach, tolerating winter temperatures as cold as −30 °C (−22 °F) or lower if healthy.

Many varieties have been especially bred for the southern Ontario climate. These include Harcot, Harglow, Hargrand, Harlayne, Harogem, Harval, Veecot, Velvaglo and Vivagold.
